When Does Flower Gifting Start

By Daniel Halliway

Down the ages, human feelings have found great expressions through the tradition of giving flowers or bouquets. People often go to a florist to buy flowers for all occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, to congratulate someone, to apologize, or just to make a person happy.

Some people think that this custom started way back during prehistoric times with archaeologists finding proof of its existence at ancient sites. Flowers have always assumed an important place in ancient Rome and Egypt and in the civilizations of ancient Greece and China whose legends and tales clearly exhibit this tradition. Gifting flowers was thought to be the most effective way to communicate one's thoughts in these cultures. The ancient Greeks even considered some flowers to be related to divinity.

The custom of gifting flowers passed down to the Middle Ages, with the French and the English holding the custom strong. The modern custom of giving a meaning to each flower is believed to have been brought to Europe after the French and the British witnessed it in Turkey.

The custom of flower gifting attained new heights in the Victorian era. As blatant expression of feelings was frowned upon during the Victorian era, the refined Victorians cultivated excellent restraint in language and they balanced this hold over the tongue by their gesture of gifting flowers to convey feelings.

The present rules of giving flowers or bouquets were formulated during this era. For example, a bouquet of red roses bought from a florist would evoke a rather hostile reaction form your beloved if you presented it to her upside down. The reason being that while red roses stand for love, giving them upside down exhibits resentment. In fact, a large number of books were written and circulated on the language of flowers in the'th century.

This custom has come down the ages, and today people across the world participate in the act of gifting flowers to communicate their emotions. In the modern age, the tradition of giving flowers or bouquets is rich in different connotations, and do's and don'ts concerning the propriety of the act have gained paramount importance. Giving a bouquet of red roses is considered to be an expression of love, while lilies are seen as symbolizing beauty and purity. On the other hand, a yellow rose depicts friendship while a single marigold symbolizes sorrow.

The histroy of giving flower continues as time goes by.There were times that a woman giving flower to a man is very inappropriate. Now it no longer registers as out of the ordinary. Virtual flowers and Internet florists allow new means to deliver virtual or true flowers anywhere in the earth. Technological and scientific advances allow for year-round blooms of each type of flower.

Once, only specific flowers could be found only in particular zones or terrains, which is no longer the case in this modern era of science and technology. If you are located in Singapore, then a visit to a Singapore flower shop will surely provide you with the choicest of flowers, both local as well as rare varieties, guaranteed to express your emotions to your dear ones in a beautiful manner. - 32376
